Back Up Seals / Back-Up Rings are employed to prevent gap extrusion, commonly used in combination with O-Rings or X-Rings for both static and dynamic loads. The Back-Up Seal stops the seal from extruding into the sealing gap. This enables sealing of higher media pressures. Applications with pulsating or varying pressures frequently use Back-Up Seals, such as hydraulic valves and pumps, cylinder bases and heads. For single acting applications one Back-up Seal is sufficient. However, for double acting applications two are necessary in order to prevent extrusion on both sides.
