Teflon® Extrusion Seals refer to sealing components made from Teflon™ (typically PTFE, PFA, or FEP) that are manufactured through the extrusion process. These seals are widely used in demanding environments due to Teflon’s exceptional chemical resistance, temperature tolerance, and low friction properties.
Teflon® is the brand name for a synthetic chemical compound called polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). The process of Teflon® extrusion involves shaping the material into a long, continuous form, such as tubes or rods, by forcing the material through die under pressure . Teflon extrusion makes it possible to manufacture high-performance components from a material that otherwise can’t be shaped using traditional plastic processing methods, which is critical in applications and industries that require tailor-made seals, such as Aerospace & Defence, Pharmaceutical and Chemical Processing.
Discovered in 1938 by a chemist at DuPont and is best known for its non-stick properties. FEP is a fluorinated ethylene propylene resin known for its excellent chemical resistance, superior electrical properties, and high service temperatures of up to 204°C (400°F). Teflon® FEP is USP class VI, FDA, 3A,10/2011, EU1935 compliant.
Types of Teflon® Extrusion Seals
Teflon® PFA is a perfluoroalkoxy copolymer resin and is made from fluoropolymer plastic . Products manufactured from Teflon® PFA can offer continuous temperatures up to 260°C (500°F). In the semi-conductor and pharmaceutical industries for example, PFA HP (High Purity) tubing is used for fluid handling applications requiring an extremely low level of chemical extractables. Teflon® PFA is USP class VI, FDA, 3A,10/2011, EU1935 compliant.
Tefzel® is a modified ETFE (ethylene-tetrafluoroethylene) fluoropolymer. Tefzel® tubing is used in applications requiring excellent impact resistance and good resistance to stress-cracking. It maintains these properties up to a temperature of over 148ºC (300ºF). These properties make ETFE Tubing an excellent choice for applications in the Chemical and Mechanical industry.
Teflon® FEP is a fluorinated ethylene propylene resin known for its excellent chemical resistance, superior electrical properties and temperatures of up to 204°C (400°F). Teflon® FEP is USP class VI, FDA, 3A,10/2011, EU1935 compliant.
